I want that one to be creative, therefore I am going to produce at least one piece of work a day. I am starting the week with this collage I have produced today. I love working with the colours I used here, I think they work together. I also like coffee stains and get inspired by the stars.
Choose two artists whose work addresses identity. Discuss a single work by each artist. Explain the ideas each artist is trying to represent and how they are expresses.

In this essay I am going to talk about two artists whose work addresses identity. The two people that I have chosen are Claude Cahun and Eadweard Muybridge, who also were modern artists in the 20th Century. I am going to discuss a single work by each of them, explain the ideas they are trying to represent and how they are expressed. The two art works I chose are 'What do you want from me?' (Cahun, 1928) and 'Head-spring, a flying pigeon interfering' (Muybridge, 1885).

Both, Cahun and Muybridge were photographers and that is why I have chosen to talk about their work particularly as it relates to my speciality which is photography and deal with the theme of identity which in my opinion is rather interesting.

Firstly I am going to talk about Cahun's art work. On the photograph she took we can see Siamese twins which by itself sounds a bit scary and unusual and at the time (1928) could of seemed a bit monster-like. Their bodies are colaborated with each other but we can see two separate heads, both completely shaved. One of the heads is looking out of the picture, with the mouth slightly open and the eyes strongly focused on something which is invisible to the outside viewer. His head is slightly tilted to the left as if he was trying to avoid any contact with his twin. His sibling is looking at him, therefore we can only see the left hand-side of his face. As we look closely, his not fully open eye might fool the viewer a bit because they can't guess whether the evilish looking twin is in fact looking at his brother or what it could appear to be the floor. His pointed nose kind of reminds us of a bird's beak. Similarly to his twin's, the mouth is slightly open as if he wanted to talk to his brother. The mood of this photograph is really mysterious. This relates to Cahun's interest in horror films.

Fairground exhibitions of physical abnormality fascinated the surrealists. In 1929 the surrealist journal Varietes published photographs of 'freaks', including Lionel the Man-Dog and Miss Violetta the Trunk-Woman. In my opinion it is a strong evidence of identity because it shows us that at the beginning of the 1930's, people like the Siamese twins were seen as freaks, something rare and unusual, perhaps scary. This could also relate to the times we live in today as Siamese twins are still a rare sight however we see it as something interesting rather than scary.

I am now going to talk about another art work I have chosen for this essay which is 'Head-spring, a flying pigeon interfering' (1885) by Eadweard Muybridge. The 'Head-spring, a flying pigeon interfering' is a series of photographs showing the movement of a man who is an athlete. As the title says, the man in the photograph is doing a head-spring. Muybridge has captured the movement in twenty four pictures, twelve from the side view and twelve from the front view. In the images we can see the stages a person has to go through to do this particular move. We can see how the person starts running, then, what it looks like, slightly falling over, but what it then appears to be touching the floor with their hands and pushing the ground so much he stands on his hands and head, to then slowly push even harder and having his legs falling in the other direction to finally stand on his feet again. The background is black and makes a great contrast with the person dressed in white. Muybridge and his team have used a massive large format camera and 17x22 inch glass plate negatives.

I think this art work is a good evidence of identity because each of the twelve pictures shows a different side and angle of the young athlete which could represente just as many different characters and personalities and everyone could relate themselves to at leats one of them, whether it is simple like the first picture, where the athlete is only starting to run or the seventh picture where he is standing on his head.

Over all I have found both of these art works really interesting because they both show different sides of people and their identities. When Cahun is trying to show us that people are mysterious and scary freaks, Muybridge sees as many personalities in people as as many moves they do.
I called it a 'teacup project'. It is unfinished. I still have the rest of a sketchbook left to do. I shall finish it when I have a bit more time for some after college projects and inspiration to do this kind of things again. Here is what my sketchbook is filled with so far!
I was looking for some inspiration and I saw something like this which I thought was a better idea rather than just drawing people.
This one was to paint an image from tv. I thought of painting my favourite tv person ever, Stewie Griffin! I used acrylics.
There was lots of things to do there and I shall post some of the work I produced for it. One of the tasks was to record all shoes that I own in any media. I chose watercolours.
I was given a list of weird words and had to pick one. My chosen word was 'pip snap'. Not knowing what I was doing, I decided to cut out the letters on the paper in my sketchbook. Thinking that would look a bit boring, I added a random red triangle to the page first as there's just something about the triangles. I then cut the letters out and painted the outlines with black paint so the letters are more visible. Before I glued a bit of old magazine to the back of that page, I painted the letters in with some red watercolours first so that we can see it on the page behind.
Okay, for some reason blogger has decided to change the first picture about!

My sketch book needed some colour in it. So I decided to stick a little paper with almost invisible word 'pip snap' on a page and then went to look up pictures of deers on the internet. I picked a gorgeous picture which I then decided to use. I drew it out with a pencil first and then covered it in colour inks. So it looks like this now:

Ada Wadahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08209951242075721550noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1315165072714594817.post-64707550628522603522011-01-10T14:13:00.000-08:002011-01-10T14:13:46.310-08:00Croydon Higher Education College Prospectus #2A few other bits and bobs I done in my Croydon Higher Education College Prospectus book. I'm less happy with them than I was with the ones in the previous note. That's all I've done for now but I shall be continuing this work once I have some spare time.
Today I have brought some more of my college work from my college draw and I shall be posting some of my work on here soon along with some work I done for the 100 tasks project. Even though I havent completed that project.
I used the Craydon Higher Education College prospectus.
Looking through the pages in the book, I have came across this particular photograph of a shoe and decided to change it, to make it my own. I like the use of tissue paper in my work but I dont think I have ever used it like that before. I stack it to the photo and drew out the shapes of the shoe and trousers, adding a few things of my own. I have also stack other bits and bobs to make it more colourful. I dont think it is quite finished yet though and I shall be adding more things to it once I think of something good.
For this photograph, just like for the previous one I have used the tissue paper and drew out the outlines of the photo with a pencil. I didnt know what else to do to it in order for it not to look so boring and once I started looking around me to find something interesting and inspirational, I discovered a little yellow triangle, a piece of paper which I used in the previous collage. I was suprised how perfect it fitted on top of the teacup! It reminded me of those chinese hats so I decided to draw a little chinese face on the cup as well to make it more fun. I still lacked something there so I have decided to look up the word 'tea' in japanese and added it to the collage as well. I'm quite happy with it to be quite honest.

That's it for now! Look forward to see more soon.Ada Wadahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08209951242075721550noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1315165072714594817.post-74323771555144680172010-12-23T01:49:00.000-08:002010-12-23T01:49:42.062-08:00Fashion illustration #3I dont think I've ever done so much work in any other workshop. Well this is the last note on fashion illustration now and in this one here are the pieces of work I done on A2 paper which was mostly live drawing and drawing clothes on manequines. These are my favourite works I've done during this workshop.
We had a lot of topics to choose from to base our work on. The theme I picked was 'People I've yet to meet'. The main idea behind it was to produce a several portraits. I have done some drawings, water colour paintings and collages in my sketchbook to choose from. I was then going to produce a few silk screen prints but I have changed my mind after my techer showed me another method of print making. I photocopied the pictures from my sketchbook, then placed a card paper on a hard surface, placed my printed picture on top of it, stroked it with a piece of rag that had chemicals on it and pressed pencil on it so that the picture transferred to the card paper. I have then pressed letters covered in ink onto the paper to give my characters some names. This is what I achieved after the process. I am not too happy with it because I wish I used stronger colours in my sketchbook instead of watercolours as the results arent too clear.

For one of my workshops this year I have chosen sketchbook with Malcolm Moseley. During the 3 weeks rotation I was to complete a sketchbook using a chosen theme. My biggest interest and hobby is photography therefore I have chosen this particular subject as my sketchbook theme.

The idea was to do a research on a photographer that has inspired me the most and show the influence they had on me and particularly my work. The photographer of my choice was Annette Phersson, a 22 year old girl from Sweden. I discoreved her photographs about a year ago when I signed into a website for amateur photographers. The main idea behind Annette’s photographs is to take artistic self portraits, photos of her boyfriend and casual landscapes or other pretty things in order to keep the simple moments forever. She always uses analogue and polaroid cameras because, as she says in a lot of virtual interviews, the process of developing a film roll is more appealing to her. The thing I most adore about her work is the delicacy, intimacy, emotions, passion, mood and the natural light. I also like how with simple shots she creates a story about her and the things she loves the most.

Influenced by Annette’s photographs of couples, I began to think of how I could improve my photos in order to make them more interesting and intimate and I discovered that it doesnt take much more than a tripod and a bit of imaginery. Seeing as I have only started using film photography a few months ago and still learning, I feel more strongly with digital photography for now, therefore the photos I used in my sketchbook workshops are mostly digital.

Choosing one particular photograph that has inspired me hugely is the one I’m attatching to this essay. Annette has used a polaroid camera and a tripod. Her boyfriend is turned to the side looking in one direction so we can only see the left hand side of his body. On his back, Annette is resting her head, facing the camera but looking somewhere far away. Her facial expression says that she’s calm and perhaps worried or upset about something. There is no connection between them what so ever in this photograph. The mood they are creating is almost nostalgic. If it wasn’t for the lovely natural light that sits on their silhouettes, shining up the photograph a bit, the mood could almost be mysterious and miserable.

Wanting to make a contrast between mine and Annette’s work, I have chosen a photograph of mine that could respose to her photograph in a slightly different way. Using a digital camera, I tried to create a mood suitable for what me and my boyfriend were both feeling at the time. The boyfriend is sitting on a bed, with his eyes closed and what it looks to be kissing my cheek. In front of him, there is my face facing the left hand side of the room with my eyes slightly closed and a slight smile of my face. The natural light brightens up the photograph. We are both making a connection together by putting our faces closely and joining in a slight kiss. The mood seems to be much happier and cheerful comparing to the one in Annette’s photograph.

Looking at Annette Pehrsson’s work I have learnt quite a lot about creating the perfect mood and working with the natural light in order to come up with some successful results.

At the end of first year at college we were asked to do a image and text project over the summer. Inspired by the PostSecret blog, I thought of doing something similar myself. I asked lots of peope to share some of their secrets with me and then added some image to them as well.

In this essay I am going to talk about two pieces of work , analyse them, say what they repressent, how they were made and what they both have in common. My chosen art works are; Still from Battleship Potemkin 1925 dir Eisenstein and Self portrait by Francis Bacon 1971.

The self portrait by Francis Bacon is a beautiful and quite abstract painting which he painted oil on canvas in 1971 and as the title of the work says, it is an image of him. He used quite unusual shapes, such as egg shaped circles around the eyes, completely out of shape nose and what appears only a half of the lips. Also the head looks slightly bigger than the body which makes the portrait a bit out of proportion. The colours he used are quite unusual for a portrait as well, although I think the purple, white, blue and yellow work well with the black background and the shapes of the face to create a touch of perhaps imperfections on Bacon’s face which might in fact reflect how he saw himself and that makes this piece of work really personal.

The second art work is a screen shot taken out from Battleship Potemkin 1925 dir Eisenstein which is a silent film directed by Sergei Eisenstein which presents a dramatized version of the mutiny that occurred in 1905 when the crew of the Russian battleship Potemkin rebelled against their officers of the Tsarist regime. The picture is in black and white seeing as it is a very old film and it shows a face of a man. His mouth and both eyes are wide open and we can imagine that he is screaming in horror. Also his hair looks a mess. The shades on the man’s face are nice and I like the fact we can’t always see the lines of his face against the white background. It is a close up of his face therefore I can not see what is going on in the whole scene.

I like these two pieces of work because both, Francis Bacon and Sergei Eisenstein leave something to the viewer’s imagination seeing as we don’t really know why Bacon has decided to use such colours and shapes in his self portrait and why Eisenstein used such a close up in this particular scene, which I think is good because there can be just as many different interpretations about the two art works.

I personally prefer the first art work which is Bacon’s self portrait because I like the various colours and shapes he used in order to show the world the way he sees himself. I think everyone could compare themselves to this piece of work.
Ada Wadahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08209951242075721550noreply@blogger.com0
